Sticker design tools and sticker printing

Sticker makers and printers, compared in words.

A review site for both halves of a custom sticker: the tool you design it in, and the service that prints and cuts it. Reviews will say what each one does well and where it falls short, without a score attached.

What a sticker order turns on

Six choices decide how a sticker turns out.

These are the questions the reviews on this site are organised around, whether the subject is a design tool or a print service.

  • Die-cut or kiss-cut

    How it is cut

A die-cut sticker is cut through the backing to its own outline and arrives on its own. A kiss-cut goes through the sticker layer only, so it peels off a backing that stays square, which is how sticker sheets work.

  • Vinyl or paper

    What it is made of

Vinyl stands up to water, sun and handling, which suits laptops, bottles and anything outdoors. Paper costs less, takes a pen, and is better kept to packaging, labels and indoor use.

  • Gloss, matte, clear, holographic

    The finish

Gloss makes colour pop and shows fingerprints. Matte cuts glare and reads as quieter. Clear lets the surface underneath show through. Holographic and glitter finishes change the look entirely.

  • Cut line and bleed

    The file

A printer needs a cut line that follows the shape, artwork that runs past it so a slightly off cut leaves no white sliver, and text kept well inside it. Most print problems start in the file, not the press.

  • Ten or ten thousand

    How many

Short runs suit a test batch or a one-off gift. Larger runs usually bring the price of each sticker down, and some services set a minimum order. The right quantity depends on what the stickers are for.

  • Design tool or blank canvas

    Where it is designed

Some people start from a template in a browser design tool; others bring finished art from their own software. Either way the file has to leave the tool in a form a printer can cut.

Two kinds of review

The tool that draws it, the shop that cuts it.

Most sticker projects need one of each, and they are judged on different things.

Sticker design tools

Browser and desktop tools for making the artwork. A review of one looks at:

  • whether it has sticker templates and shapes to start from
  • how it handles outlines, cut lines and transparent backgrounds
  • which file types it exports, and at what quality
  • what the free version leaves out

Sticker printing services

The services that turn a file into a sheet or a roll. A review of one looks at:

  • which cuts, materials and finishes it offers
  • what it asks for in a print-ready file, and whether it checks it
  • minimum order sizes and how pricing moves with quantity
  • proofs, reprints and what happens when an order goes wrong

No reviews are published yet.

This site is new. When the first reviews land they will be linked from here, each one saying plainly what a tool or service does, where it falls short and who it suits.

Until then, the about page sets out what the site covers and how it is written.
